FAQ

Q. Can I open a Malaysian bank account on a tourist visa?
A. Generally no. Due to tighter anti-money-laundering rules, account opening requires a long-term visa such as an Employment Pass (EP), student visa, guardian visa or MM2H. On a tourist visa, services that work without an account — Wise, or TNG eWallet with DuitNow QR — are the practical option.
Q. Can I open an account from abroad before arriving?
A. Generally no. Foreigners must visit a branch in person for a new account. As an exception, HSBC may allow non-resident opening with a conditional approval letter after an MM2H visa application. Prepare your documents in advance so you can open an account soon after arrival.
Q. What documents do I need to open an account?
A. The standard set is: (1) original passport, (2) long-term visa, (3) proof of address (tenancy agreement, utility bill, etc.) and (4) a Malaysian mobile number. Banks generally also ask for a letter from your employer or school, so prepare one in advance.
Q. Can I remit via Japanese megabanks (MUFG, SMBC, Mizuho)?
A. They do not offer personal accounts. All three have branches in Malaysia, but corporate-only. For personal overseas transfers, use a local or foreign bank account, or a remittance service such as Wise.
